How is Composite Decking Made?
SAiGE Longlife Decking’s Technical Manager, Sam who is based in China and has a degree in Wood Plastic Composites explains below the process of how SAiGE’s composite decking is produced.
Composite Decking being made
The process mainly consists of 3 steps: granulating, extruding, and surface finish.
1. Recycled polyethylene HDPE and wood particles are mixed and heated. Colourants, coupling agents, UV stabilizers, and lubricants are added to the recycled materials and make the WPC (Wood Plastic Composite) materials stained with a variety of colours. These additives are non corrosive and are highly resistant to rot and decay. The mixing materials are finally granulated into particles ready to go through extruding process.
2. In the extruding process the granulated particles are heated and forced out by twin screw extrusion to go through the tooling shape. The pellets are then re-melted and formed into the final shape (the decking board), then the boards are cooled by a cooling water system and then cut into the required lengths automatically.
3. The WPC Decking Boards production process is completed by applying the required surface finish (including simulated wood grain if required) which makes the materials wood like, the finishes available includes sanding, brushing, and wood grain. The boards are placed on large rollers and fed through the appropriate machine. SAiGE chooses a brushed finish for our Hollow Garden Decking or Sand Finish for our Solid Commercial Decking.
